Eating breakfast when suddenly, the Philippines in on the news - TopicsExpress

Eating breakfast when suddenly, the Philippines in on the news again (nothing less than the BBC...Live!!!). Featuring the angry, gleeful reactions of the Filipino public during our latest corruption scandal. This reminded me of a documentary about the French Revolution I watched last night. If only the guillotine were still in use today, the vengeful public would probably demand the beheading of this cringe-worthy Napoles creature, who seems to have become our unsophisticated answer to the beheaded French queen, Marie Antoinette. Or, if the Filipino people were in an especially bloodthirsty mood, their anger might descend upon Napoles, tearing her body to pieces and parading the chopped bits throughout the capital, a la Princesse de Lamballe. Fortunately (for Napoles), we live in a gentler, slightly more humane era. So in the end, Napoles would probably be punished with a jail sentence, if she ever does get punished at all. But since past behaviour is the best predictor of future behaviour, as this political soap opera eventually becomes boring, the Filipino people will lose interest and will forget her. Just like what happened to the corruption scandals we endured in the past. It is the Curse of the Filipino to rarely learn from his past experiences. He is scatter-brained. His attentions and energies are constantly distracted and diverted by another political drama, another earthquake, another typhoon, another insurgency in the South. Or, he simply becomes bored and moves on, leaving the problem unsolved, the solution half-baked. After all the drama and the showmanship, one hopes that solid progress and positive change must FINALLY come out of this experience. We like to be fed, but we prefer to be entertained. That is why our leaders may be incapable of filling our stomachs, but they sure as hell are so talented at entertaining us. Drama is what our taxpayers money is buying. Vive la Republique.
