Eating dog and cat meat in China is mostly constrained to particular regions and most people in China abhor this subculture. A recent story demonstrates some of the compassionate feelings people have for our special companions. In WuHan (武汉), China, a police dog named Wangcai passed away at the age of 12. The highly loved Labrador was called a hero after he detected 10 dangerous items during the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. To honor Wangcais life, the Wuhan police department held a special ceremony during his funeral and Wangcai was given a full salute. Wangcai was buried with all of his medals (english.sina/china/p/2014/1010/744519.html). You may wonder why some show special love and affection for dogs yet others abuse and eat them. Some people that I have talked to said that the dogs that they eat are mixed breed dogs that are not smart or useful to people. One of our campaigns is to document the lives of mutt dogs that were rescued from the Yulin Dog Meat Festival to show how intelligent, helpful, and loveable they are to our lives as well.
