Ebac Northern League Division One 05 October 2013 Goals galore in final assault by Ken Milgate Durham City 9 – Scott Fenwick 25, 39pen, 54 Hindmarch 35, Ward 76, Stoker 77, Ellison 85, Scott 89, Galloway 90 Hebburn Town 3 – McMahon 13pen, 48, Johnson 62 With just over an hour played, City conceded a third unnecessary goal and were in danger of losing control of a seesaw of a game; but five goals in the final fourteen minutes turned the game on its head, and but for several top-drawer reflex saves by Andrew Hunter the margin of victory would have embarrassed the visitors even more and had archivists thumbing through the record books. In the opening exchanges Steven Graham shot over the bar, and Jordan Galloway had all the time in the world to place his header from an Olly Hotchkiss corner but was wide of the target in the end. Ian Ward was off target but a lot closer on 9minutes when he drilled his shot wide of the far post after James Oates had won the ball and sent the forward on his way. But Rhys Jobling felled Daniel Smith in the box when he was going nowhere and the City keeper was sent the wrong way by marksman Calvin McMahon. Craig Ellison poked a shot wide and hit a soft shot all along the ground before Stephen Harrison steamed in to connect with a Scott Fenwick pass but blasted his effort over the bar. The equalizer came on 25minutes when the industrious Ward set up Fenwick who turned sweetly on the spot before smashing the ball into the roof of the net. Hunter parried Fenwick’s shot on 31minutes but City increased their lead a minute later through Craig Hindmarch after a Ward effort had struck the crossbar from an Ellison cross. Ward skied a shot and Fenwick tried to walk the ball in before Hunter saved, the visiting keeper then flooring Fenwick who increased City’s lead from the spot. Two minutes into the second half Hotchkiss squared a quickly-taken free-kick to Ellison but the latter’s shot went straight to Hunter; a minute later Jack Walker failed to clear Hunter’s clearance from hand and allowed McMahon to lob Jobling to reduce the deficit. In a subsequent flurry of goalmouth activity a great save by Hunter kept a Ward header, Oates headed against the bar and Conor Winter’s shot hit a City upright. Fenwick completed his hat-trick with a header from a Hotchkiss free-kick, but City’s offside trap was breached by Ben Johnson to make the scoreline 4-3. Hotchkiss toe poked over the bar, and Galloway missed out on yet another header before Hunter turned a Fenwick shot over the bar. This crazy match exploded into a one-way rout when in the space of two minutes Ward headed home a Hotchkiss corner and Max Stoker rounded the keeper before blasting home from a tight angle from an Ellison assist. Joe Hughes hooked wide on 82minutes before Ellison scored the goal of the match from all of thirty yards to give Hunter no chance. Hunter pulled off a great one-handed save to deny Hughes before Harrison carved up the Hebburn defence to set up Matthew Scott for goal number eight. Hunter saved his finest save for the final minute to turn a Hughes shot over the bar from point-blank range before Galloway made it third time lucky with his head to convert yet another corner from Olly “Mr Assist” Hotchkiss. Hughes had a goal-bound shot deflected for a corner before the referee’s whistle cut short City’s quest for a double-figure victory in which Ward and Hindmarch caught the eye through physical presence and beavering efficiency respectively, Fenwick winning the accolade of MOTM for his hat-trick and belligerence, mostly positively channelled, sometimes aimed in rutting retribution.
