Ebonyi LG poll: Opposition can’t field candidates, says PDP stalwart on July 02, 2013 / in News 11:00 pm ABAKALIKI—Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ebonyi State, Chief Ugorji Ama-Oti , Tuesday declared that opposition parties in the state lacked the capacity to field candidates during the forthcoming local government election scheduled for September 28, 2013. BY PETER OKUTU ABAKALIKI—Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ebonyi State, Chief Ugorji Ama-Oti , Tuesday declared that opposition parties in the state lacked the capacity to field candidates during the forthcoming local government election scheduled for September 28, 2013. Ama-Oti, who stated this while briefing newsmen on the party’s readiness for the forthcoming LG polls, insisted that the only reason that would make opposition parties field candidates for the polls would be to benefit from the state government’s financial support during the election. He called on them to sponsor private member bill at the State House of Assembly, if they felt aggrieved over Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission, EBSIEC’s decision to use option A4 voting system for the election. He said: “There is no other party in the state apart from PDP as I speak to you. They can’t afford ordinary billboard. They can’t. “I would be surprised if any of them can field any candidate. They will only field candidates because they think government will, as usual, release some funds to support the election. They can’t field candidates. Where will they get the candidates from? The issue is not EBSIEC because anything the commission is doing flows from the law. “The reason the opposition is complaining about the option A4 is to have excuse to make after the election.. “What they should do now is to sponsor a private member bill or public bill to the State House of Assembly requesting for amendment of the Electoral Act”. “The law was not amended for this particular election. The law had been there before now, since 2010, and why didn’t they challenge the law in order to get it amended before now.” Meanwhile, Vanguard gathered that seven coordinators of various Development Centres in the state had so far resigned their appointments ahead of the forthcoming local government election. They include, Mr. Nwaode Eche of Ikwo Development Centre, Mr. Paul Iganga of Echiaba Development Centre, Mrs. Franca Okpo of Abakaliki Development Centre, Mr. Joseph Obasi of Akaeze Development Centre, Mr. Ihebunandu Okorie of Okposi Development Centre, Mrs. Maria Okohu of Imoha Development Centre and Mr. Peter Nwaogbaga of Amachi Development Centre.
