Eco products could reduce cancer Written by Nick Many users of eco products might think that they are improving their own health by only applying natural ingredients to their skin. But the effects could be much more widespread than that, if research from Idaho State University is correct. The academic institution looked at the effects of climate across the northern hemisphere and the prevalence of prostate cancer at different latitudes. Further from the equator, more cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed - with pesticides believed to be a cause. Researcher Sophie St-Hilaire says: "The trends are consistent with what we would expect given the effects of climate on the deposition, absorption and degradation of persistent organic pollutants including pesticides." Diagnosing prostate cancer can be difficult as Idaho State University explains its biomarker, prostate-specific antigen, can vary in its presence in the body due to other effects, often meaning an invasive and painful biopsy is required. However, a switch to the type of organic ingredients used in eco products could not only be one ideal way to reduce the levels of pesticides in the air, but could also potentially reduce the risk of cancer developing as a result.
