Ed Roman, musician, gentleman farmer By Alex Sher For those of you in Shelburne who have already heard the music of Ed Roman, you will not be surprised to find out Shelburne’s very own local Ed Roman is up for two music awards in North Carolina at the Artistic Music Guild Awards, Best Artist Of The Year, and Male Vocalist Of The Year. No small feat when realized that a Shelburne resident is up for awards that will be televised, bringing in 20 million views on November 15th! “It’s so exciting. Wish the music industry was more like this in Canada,” Roman commented. And just where does this talented, singer, song writer, and self taught musician, gentleman farmer get his resolve? “I pray every day in my own way and I am very thankful to people who made me who I am,” commented Roman. If the name Roman sounds familiar, one might happen to remember Anthony (Tony) Roman, a long time, well loved politician whose titles are vast and well known all the way to Ottawa. Tony Roman was Mayor of the Town of Markham, from 1970 to 1984, Chair of the Regional Municipality of York in 1984, and an Independent Member of Parliament from 1984 to 1988. Born in 1936 in Czechoslovakia, Roman’s illustrious career left its mark his youngest son, Ed and when Anthony Roman departed this world in 1992, just 56 years old, he had succeeded in opening the hearts and minds of politician conceptual thinking. “My Dad would say, ‘Things can go aerie very quickly if you are not involved in social politics even on some baseline level,” explained Roman and that affected me. Someday I may go into politics but music and teaching is so important to me.” Though Roman attributes a lot of his success to his mother’s influence as well as his father’s, Roman is a beacon of hope to all those who live with dyslexia as he taught himself to read music notes, play instruments, and that will, that desire to communicate with music is the very skill that allows the public to revel in Roman’s talent today. Roman’s wife, Kim an extremely talented business woman runs Black Earth Pottery and together, the couple being interested and invested in the greater good, even grow their own vegetables. This self described Gentleman Farmer, is precisely that in every regard which is exactly what you can hear in his music. Roman’s voice is smooth, unwavering, decisive and calm, soothing and inviting. It’s no wonder that Roman is up for the awards and his home town of Shelburne supports his endeavours.
