Ed Sheeran is first Briton to join celebrity-only Facebook app - - TopicsExpress

Ed Sheeran is first Briton to join celebrity-only Facebook app - They already have VIP areas which are closed to the rest of us - and now celebrities even have their own Facebook app. The social networking site has launched a service, called Mentions, which can be used only by the rich and famous. Now the singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has become the first Briton to sign up to the exclusive app, aimed at “influencers” in art, sport and music. Sheeran, 23, was invited to join Mentions, which is available only in America, after his latest album topped the US charts last month. A spokesman for Facebook said the company planned to launch the service in more countries in the “near future”. Other celebrities already allowed into the club include the singer Mariah Carey, the author and entrepreneur Arianna Huffington and the socialite Kim Kardashian, wife of the rapper Kanye West. The service is designed to allow celebrities to get closer to their fans by allowing them to respond to comments made about them on the site. All Facebook users can download the app to search for mentions, but only the rich and famous are allowed to respond. Facebook says it will limit membership to a “few thousand” people. However, Sheeran appears to be slightly embarrassed by his membership. His spokesman told the Sunday Times: “He did not know this was such a bonkers system. “He just wants to talk directly with his fans as he can on Twitter. We shall see if he keeps using it.” The app has also had a frosty reception from Star Trek actor William Shatner, who last week complained the service “forced” him to follow other celebrities. He said the app had first suggested fellow Star Trek star George Takei, who has famously feuded with over the years. In a post on his Tumblr account, Shatner wrote: “The first person on the list I was given was George Takei (rolling my eyes.) “I ended up choosing Robert Downey Jr. to follow and then I hid his posts (sorry Robert!) I think that is a big flaw in the set up. If this app is for celebrities then WHY force them to follow another celebrity in order to set up this app? “I think that is a flaw; I’m already following those who I want to follow - why insist I follow that short list of others?” A spokesman for Facebook said: “At launch, Mentions will be available on iPhone for people with verified Pages in the US. We plan to roll it out to more countries in the in the near future.” Source By Telegraph -feedteck/ed-sheeran-first-briton-join-celebrity-facebook-app/
