Eddie McGuire demands compensation from Gold Coast before releasing Rodney Eade to the Suns Jon Ralph Herald Sun Eddie demands compo for Eade’s release EDDIE McGuire says Collingwood won’t release Rodney Eade to the Gold Coast until the Suns hand the Pies compensation for his loss. McGuire told the Herald Sun on Tuesday the Pies would need to pay a premium to replace footy boss Eade — and then have to apply the new football department tax on that wage. Eade has told the Pies he will accept a three-year deal to coach Gold Coast, with the Suns board set to rubberstamp that appointment this week. Eade’s wife Wendy said the opportunity was too good to refuse, although she will stay in Melbourne next year as their daughter completes VCE. But according to McGuire, the 56-year-old will only go with the Pies’ blessing once they get a cheque from the Suns. There is precedent, with Port Adelaide receiving around $20,000 from St Kilda when Alan Richardson was appointed Saints coach last year. “There will be no deal unless we are compensated. There is now a salary cap on administrations and I won’t be paying overs for a replacement,’’ McGuire said. “My man has a three-year contract and he has been totally professional and just as Peter Gordon’s club had to dip into its pocket to get Ryan Griffen to GWS, so too someone will have to dip into their pocket to get our director of coaching. “These are clubs screaming out that we needed a footy department cap and we are paying money to subsidise them and they are using that to take our people. “My birthday present (Wednesday) on the 16th anniversary of being president of Collingwood is a nice compensation cheque from the Gold Coast. “Or the AFL, or anyone else who wants to sign one. Send it down to the Westpac Centre and I will send Rodney Eade back with a nice bow around him.” Gold Coast chairman John Witheriff would not discuss compensation on Tuesday, refusing to confirm Eade’s deal. “I don’t have any comment on that or whether it’s Rodney,’’ he told the Herald Sun. “The committee has finished the interview process and they have got a report which has to come to the board. “I am hoping the board will make a decision in the next day or so and if we are able to get a conclusion on that we will be able to make some announcements.” While McGuire’s threat is controversial he will need to pay overs to secure a replacement. The football department tax applies from next year and is set at 37.5 cents in the dollar above a set figure. There is no official compensation formula or clause under the football department tax that mandates compensation, but McGuire is prepared to play hard ball. When Richardson was appointed in mid-November last year the Power hit out at the timing of the decision, but eventually relented. Eade will join the Suns despite the haggling over compensation, with the Pies promising to search the AFL, rival codes and even internationally to find a replacement. Eade only met with Suns football boss Marcus Ashcroft on the weekend before presenting to the selection panel on Monday.
