Edge of Tomorrow Review: The last two science fiction films Tom - TopicsExpress

Edge of Tomorrow Review: The last two science fiction films Tom Cruise starred in were mediocre. The trailers made this film look dull and generic. I had very low expectations for this film. In spite of all of this, Edge of Tomorrow was much better than what I expected. The special effects in this film are effective and dazzling. At times, this film feels and looks like a video game. For the record, I mean that in the best way possible. The action in this film is energetic and thrilling throughout. There was no point at which the action became overbearing or underwhelming. This is due to Doug Liman’s sharp direction and the fantastic editing. None of the comedic moments in Edge of Tomorrow feel forced (take notes Michael Bay). They all occur naturally within the context of the plot and only add to the enjoyment of the film. The aliens are more interesting than I expected. At first, they seem generic, but the more I learned about them, the more I wanted to know. The acting is very solid. Tom Cruise is excellent as Cage, a character is different than those he usually plays, believe it or not. Cruise is believably scared and out of his element when Cage is. As Cage comes to care more and more about defeating the aliens, Cruise pulls off the transformation seamlessly. The best performance in this film comes from Emily Blunt who manages to be both a seemingly invincible warrior and vulnerable at the same time. Blunt’s character, Rita is excellently written. The other characters in this film are interesting to a lesser extent, but I believe that was intentional. The story is mostly about Cage and Rita after all. Edge of Tomorrow has a few weaknesses. For example, the first fifteen minutes of this film feel slower than the rest of the film. This portion of the film is needed, but it is blown out of the water by the energy that the film gets when the time travel starts occurring. The ending could have been left out. It was predictable. The film should have ended with the fate of the war between aliens and humans being decided. Instead, it goes on a few more minutes. I did appreciate that the ending cuts off before clichés would ensue. The ending as it is functions better than if the story had continued any longer. The story would have had to slow down and lose that fun and energetic pace that makes this film memorable. This film even has an emotional component to it as well. Is it great? No. However, it is well handled and fits naturally into the story. Edge of Tomorrow is an excellent Summer Blockbuster. The fact that this film is not a major financial hit in America (it is doing well overseas) proves that quality and box office are not linked. If you are a fan of science fiction blockbusters and want to have good time at the movies, then this film is for you! Rating: 3.75/5 B+
