Edithvale had a most successful day on Saturday, with five sides up and one narrow loss. Div 1 Sec 4 Hosted lowly Mordialloc, and won by a solid 19 shots. Ray Costolloe’s four dominated their match, picking up a 5 and a 4, winning seven ends in a row to take a 19 shot lead after 15 ends, and then holding onto it. Billy Morton’s team also applied scoreboard pressure, powering away from 6-all after 8 ends to a strong 13 shot win. John O’Donnell’s four had a long, hard–fought match which finished all square around 5:30pm, while Albert Chung’s crew were down 12 shots after 10 ends, but then contained their opposition for a 13 shot loss. This side holds onto 8th position on the ladder, and travels to Pakenham next week. They then took their lead out to 10 shots before giving up a 6 on the last end. Barb Overson’s team had a slow start at 2-14, but got back to 15-16 before falling away at the end. Lisa Williams’ four picked up two 5s early in the game for an 11-5 lead, and maintained control for the rest of the match. Ian Thomas’ four led 16-5 after 9 ends, but giving up a 6 on the 16th end proved costly, and they lost by 2 shots. Pam Bryant’s team were 8-all after 10 ends, fell away to 9-14, got back to 14-15 and finished just 3 shots down. Peter Howell’s four were the sole winners in the side, home by a single shot after leading narrowly all day. What a wonderful effort, one that should be long remembered. Joe Musco and team of Bob Davies (3rd), Norm Lewis (2nd) and Alan Seddon (Lead) spearheaded this assault with an incredible but very creditable 36-9 win! They lost only 7X1’s and 1X2 for the day but picked up 3X5’s, 2X4’s, 2X3’s and 2X2’s, and 5X1’s (I’d say that’s a very good day!) They were ably assisted by Eric Viney and team of Bernie, Bernie, Bernie Turnbull (3rd), Andrew Perkins (2nd), and Bob Baird (Lead) who also “had a day out” winning 25-10. They were 17-10 up on the 18th but piled on 2x2’s and a 4 in the last 3 ends. Ray Smith and team of Roger Williams (3rd), Ian McPherson (2nd) and Glenys Gionis (Lead) also had a handsome win 25-17. They had a game where they picked up no’s in spurts (12 ends/9 ends i.e. they won 4 ends in a row twice and 3 in a row after losing the first end for 4.) That too, is a wonderful effort from this team, and with the Costolloe team down by a 5 ....did it matter!! Great Side Effort! They were 5 up on their card on their last end, but 1 down at the head. The opposition played a bowl a tad too heavy but one which left them still 1 up, further back. John Marsh drew shot, and Skip Bernie drew 2 more for a 3 on the last. This gave Edi 12 points +4 shots. Top of the Ladder! Carolyn Burgess and team of Mary Weston (3rd), Di (Sandwich Queen) Cameron (2nd) and Sally King (Lead) had a very good day winning 25-12. After getting even at 2 all on the 3rd, they never looked back. Indeed they picked up a 6 on the 15th after a 4 on the 4th., limiting their opposition to 8 scoring ends for the day. The best effort of the day however went to Jeanette Barrett and team of Claire Baskett (3rd), Judy Marchant (2nd) and Gail Hamilton (Lead). They had a win most can only ever dream of 39-6! They kept their opposition in hand, conceding only 3 1’s and 1 3. The first loss was a 1 on the 11th, the next another 1 on the 14th (24-2) a harrowing day for the opposition, I’m sure.
