Eduardo Sandoval has posted these two photos of SAETA - Sociedad Anonima Ecuatoriana de Transportes Aereos V.785D series Viscounts. The first photo is of V.785D series Viscount HC-AVP. SAETA purchased HC-AVP from Alitalia on the 24 May 1971. It was delivered from East Midlands Airport, Leicestershire, England to Aeropuerto Mariscal Sucre, Quito, Ecuador via the USA during May 1971. On 23 April 1979 HC-AVP crashed into thick jungle on high ground in Pastaza Province, Ecuador, whilst en-route from Aeropuerto Mariscal Sucre, Quito, Ecuador to Cuenca, Ecuador. There were no survivors among the 52 passengers and 5 crew. SAETA sent up another Viscount to search for the missing plane, as at the time they were not sure what had happened to it, after the radio silence and non-arrival of the aircraft. On 30 April 1979 a rescue aircraft of Fuerza Aerea Ecuatoriana crashed while searching for the Viscount. 2 of the 7 crew died in the crash. In 1984 the Viscount was eventually found on high ground, 25 nautical miles off of its original planned track, but at a lower altitude than their flight plan of 18,000 feet. SAETA purchased HC-ARS from Alitalia on the 17 December 1969. It was noted on maintenance at Field Aircraft Services, East Midlands Airport, Castle Donington, Leicestershire, England on the 29 January 1972. On 15 August 1976 HC-ARS crashed 660 feet below the peak of the 20,700 ft. Chimborazo Volcano while operating a scheduled domestic service from Aeropuerto Mariscal Sucre, Quito to Cuenca, Ecuador. None of the 55 passengers and 4 crew survived. Despite an intensive search the wreckage could not be found. The wreckage was eventually found, nearly 27 years later, on the 18 February 2003.
