Education and monkhood (ប្រវត្តិបណ្ឌិត ខៀវ ជុំ ជាទស្សនវិទូខ្មែរ ប្រែជាភាសាអង្គេសដោយ ភ. សារ៉ន In 1924, he was novitiated as Samaêera in the age of 17 under the most venerable Thornna Phann as preceptor. After studying and completing the duty as novice, he became the teacher of literature and mathematics imparting the guidance of teaching to the Khmer’s children and youth about 80. In his Seddhi monastery, he was appointed as the president of Dhamma congress of Dhamma talk (Dhammasabhä) and playing role as counselor of committee of Dhamma missionary work in his own village’s monastery, Anlong Tasek. In 1926, turning to the age of 19, he proceeded to Wat Lanka in Phnom Penh city for strengthening his monastic education, knowledge and learning. It should be noted also that it was not easy, at that time, to find the proper school to study. As the consequence, he immersed himself into seeking for the teacher by his own way. Then he was invited to study at teachers’ kuèi or teacher’s houses. In daily life, his life was sustained and supported by going for alms in the village as usual. Sometimes, he could get enough food, but sometimes less food in quelling his hungriness. The use of water was limited to 5-10 liters a day for him. Falling sick, he was not cared for by any doctor, and there was no right drug for treatment; while his accommodation could be available also for a small mattress. But those obstacles and challenge were not able to bar passionate scholar from firmly deciding to absorb the knowledge and understanding. On Friday 19th March 1928, he was ordained as bhikkhu by his preceptor named Dhammalikhita La-Vi Em entitling him as ‘Dhammapäla’ in the sense of ‘Dhamma keeper” from then. He finished the Dhamma Vinaya courses for Buddhist monks in all grades including three levels (trai, do and ek levels) and Päli Buddhist primary school including general knowledge of Buddhism(at that time, there was no exam for certificate). Spending for three years on grasping the knowledge in the Päli primary school, he decided to teach Päli language in Wat Chhrey, Prey Veng province for three years; Wat Gok Threa, Kampong Cham province for three years; Wat Dey Eth, Kandal province for four years. Later on, he came back to Wat Lanka again to teach Khmer language and foreign language for one year more (1934-1945).
