Edward Snowden, the young NSA contract worker who exposed the government’s program of snooping on Americans, says he expects to suffer for being a whistleblower, and never be a part of society again. For my TV show, I recently interviewed a couple of government whistleblowers, and I’d say Mr. Snowden is right about what to expect. One of my guests has seen his career destroyed and is facing espionage charges for exposing what he believed to be blatant abuse of power. It’s ironic that Mr. Snowden started out as an idealistic young Obama supporter. The very platform Obama ran on in 2008 is still online at his website, Change-dot-gov. It reads, quote: “We need to empower federal employees as watchdogs of wrongdoing and partners in performance. Barack Obama will strengthen whistleblower laws to protect federal workers who expose waste, fraud, and abuse of authority in government.” End quote. It’s still there, in black and white. Of course, it’s also surrounded by promises to get rid of lobbyists, stop writing legislation behind closed doors, and go through the budget line-by-line to eliminate wasteful spending. So potential whistleblowers should learn: don’t believe everything you read on the Internet. ~~Huckabee
