Effectiveness of local authorities essential in combating wildlife - TopicsExpress

Effectiveness of local authorities essential in combating wildlife crime Back in 2005 when ENV’s wildlife crime hotline was established, we could usually count the week’s cases on one hand. Furthermore, ENV was battling against the old, slow systems at work within the Vietnamese authorities, and it took an age for ENV to reach the right person and push them to finalize the case. However today, things are very different; our hotline has been really busy receiving reports of wildlife crimes from all over Vietnam, and the authorities are becoming more supportive and effective due to the increased transparency and accountability caused by ENV’s hotline and work in the crime unit. Quang Tri is a prime example of this success; Quang Tri is one of the hottest wildlife crime areas and the dedication and efficiency of the local Forest Protection Department (FPD) is therefore essential. Recently ENV has received a lot of cases from this area and the Quang Tri FPD seems to be really quick in reacting to the cases we report to them. Last weekend, after receiving ENV’s report about a macaque kept at resident’s house in Quang Tri province, they immediately came to the house, identified the Stump-tailed macaque (Macaca arctoides) (which had been kept there for 12 years), and confiscated the animal. This kind of immediate and consistent action from the authorities is exactly what ENV’s Wildlife Crime Unit is working towards – eventually we aim to have all authorities working just as well as those in Quang Tri!
