Efforts by management of large companies to prevent staff - TopicsExpress

Efforts by management of large companies to prevent staff discussing and comparing their salaries are ridiculous and insupportable — the only purpose such secrecy serves is to help companies pay some employees (usually women and/or local staff) less than others doing a comparable job. Transparency about salaries should be routine, especially for an information company like Reuters, and I was stunned to be reprimanded by my managers in 2010 for telling other staff what I was paid. For the record, my 2011 salary as a deputy editor-in-charge of Asia political and general news, based in Singapore, was SGD$197,800. I would urge all staff to openly share your salary — it helps ensure everybody is paid fairly.
