Eighteen is a great age for a cat - Andrew Lloyd Webber On October 7, 1982, Andrew Lloyd Webbers Cats opened in Broadway. Running for 18 years and 7,397 performances at the Winter Garden Theater, it became the longest-running production in Broadway at the time, a title later claimed by the Phantom of the Opera. Based on T. S. Eliots 1939 Old Possums Book of Practical Cats, and composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the musical follows a tribe of cats called the Jellicles, one of whom is sent to heaven. The last Cats performance in Broadway was on June 25, 2000. Cats was seen by more than 10 million people in New York, but also produced in many countries around the world and seen by an estimated 50 million people.
