Eighteen years ago I worked on a project with the goal to provide community-based healthcare reform. While access to insurance and coverage was part of the discussion, healthcare reform was much more than just insurance, Meaningful change needs to address the systemic issues within the US healthcare system, including skyrocketing costs. While part of the cost issue is that providers right off large amounts of debt which then gets spread to paying customers, I have not seen one apologist for Obamacare explain how their legislation addresses this issue. Another driver of cost is a shift in focus from treatment to prevention. Again, I have not heard anyone defend Obamacare on this front. America is a great place to get sick...but the system is not oriented around preventing that from happening. The incentives in the system are misaligned. Simply forcing people to have insurance is no guarantee of affordable access. Providing access is no guarantee of better outcomes. I believe the system needs to change, but Obamacare is not the change that we need and in fact makes it harder to achieve real reform.
