Ekong Udom: A Man Against Misrule In a contemporary society, the subjects crave for leadership without cynical rulership. They belief that politics and governance are too serious and too important to be left to anybody. They see incompetence in mismanagement, maladministration, abuse of power, tyranny, corruption and misgovernment. The chance to decide who will govern at different levels serve as an opportunity for the public to make choices about the policies, programs and future directions of government action, thus promoting accountability. While electing leaders along sentimental lines may have strengthened some followers, others are influenced by issues and policy preferences. In the end, critical realignments are made so as to sustain political relevance. In the words of Historian Robert Dallek, ‘claims to greatness as leaders rest not on your restraint but on your accomplishments’. The above compels us to see six key qualities in leadership success: activism, vision, pragmatism, charisma, consensus building, and credibility. Luck also plays a part even though any great leader would manage to make a mark even when circumstances seemed to conspire against them. We have seen all of the above in Prince Udom’s work/career and political strides. The minefield of our constituency politics is strewn with leaders who are too ideological to bend and make concessions for the sake of their subjects, probably because they are lacking in political direction that their administrations faltered under the burden of their drift and lack of initiative. Hence; it should be our place to choose someone with the keenest political sense required to combine a clear understanding of his goals with both a carefully judged assessment of what degree of change the constituency was ready to accept, and a strategic sense of when to accommodate himself to opponents who are ready to yield on significant points. With these skills, PRINCE EKONG UDOM has set his objectives too high, or remained all his political capital in promising battles. - Friends Of Prince Ekong Udom (FOPEU)
