El Deguello Last song of the day. This is the song the defenders of the Alamo woke up to on March 6,1836. El Deguello is the bugle call the Mexican Army buglers performed during the 1836 siege to signal that the defenders of the mission would receive no quarter by the attacking Mexican Army under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Deguello is a Spanish noun from the verb degollar, to describe the action of throat-cutting. Basically it is a war cry meaning give no quarter, complete destruction to the enemy, everyone is to meet death. On my yearly visits to the San Antonio de Valero mission, I stand outside and imagine Santa Annas buglers on the north, south and west wall aggressively serenading the defenders with Deguello accompanied by rapid cannon fire and Santa Annas excited troops charging and yelling Viva Santa Anna, Viva la republica! The Deguello is the defenders song of glory. Listen to this with your eyes closed and imagine... their gallantry and fate... We owe our existence to them. God bless Texas.
