‘Elections: Bring them on’ ZIMBABWEANS from all walks of life - TopicsExpress

‘Elections: Bring them on’ ZIMBABWEANS from all walks of life yesterday vowed to vote for their preferred presidential candidate despite President Robert Mugabe and Zanu PF’s moves to stampede the country into an election without electoral, security sector and media law reforms. This followed Mugabe’s unilateral proclamation of July 31 as the election date yesterday. In a snap survey by NewsDay ordinary Zimbabweans said the holding of polls was in Zimbabwe’s best interest while others said it was long overdue. A Harare man who refused to be named said elections were overdue, and if Zanu PF believe they will win this election, they will find out on July 31. “Let the election come, then we will deal with these skewed politicians,” he said without elaborating. A Harare woman, Miriam Muchineripi said the proclamation would affect the hosting of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation general assembly to be co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Zambia in August. “I think early elections are bad for the country because this is bound to affect the UNWTO negatively if the election result is contested. The country will, therefore, lose a lot of investment opportunities. However, on a personal note I want elections to be held early. The President is right, we should be allowed to choose our leader as soon as possible so that we can move forward, the GNU (Government of National Unity) has reached its sell-by date,” Muchineripi said. A street vendor Lovemore Mhute echoed Muchineripi’s sentiments, saying: “They (GNU leaders) should go for an election. We are tired of this inclusive government. If the Constitutional Court ruling says they should hold elections on July 31, then elections must be held on July 31.” Another citizen, Bekithemba Dzvairo said elections should take place without delay. “We are happy with the President’s proclamation. Let us go for elections, it was long overdue. Gushungo (Mugabe) has shown he has all the power. We are currently living in a life of confusion with this GNU and we are tired,” Dzvairo said. Crispen Taruvinga said elections should just be held as leaders had been ruling the country through negotiations for too long. “This issue of our leaders being involved in never-ending quarrels must come to a stop. It is time for the people of Zimbabwe to decide. These quarrels have been blocking investments,” Taruvinga said. Dougston Matapuza said elections had to be held soon for the country to move forward. “We need to move forward, the President is right, let us go for elections in July,” Matapuza said.
