Elections are critical to democracies around the world. They regulated by legal and regulatory frameworks. Despite the preponderance of legal frameworks like the 1999 Constitution (As amended), Electoral Act 2010, and other policies and regulations of INEC, proper election management in Nigeria remains elusive and wrought electoral fraud and malfeasance. No doubt legal framework exist to guarantee credible polls and protect the scared right of citizens to vote but where elections are consistently plagued with numerous challenges that impede free and fair polls despite the existence of extant laws one is bound to making rationale of making electoral laws. Some people believe that safeguarding credible polls in Nigeria is not a question of law but the need address the culture of electoral impunity. Others strongly hold the view that our electoral laws are obsolete and suffer some porosity hence there is need to stiffen some provisions to guarantee credible polls in 2015. Beyond stiffening some provisions it is critical to introduce new innovations into our electoral laws to with global best practices. What is your take?
