Electronic Etiquette: Computer Issues - Empowering Parents Q: What boundaries and rules of etiquette should be set so that my children will have a positive computer experience? A: It cannot be over-emphasized that appropriate guidelines are essential to the healthy development of a child. Boundaries send a message to children that they are loved - and that their parents care what happens to them. It also helps to build self-confidence because they know what is expected. Here are some guidelines: * Young children should be taught to always ask their parents, May I use the computer? * Set specific times your child may, or may not, use the computer. * Children should never attempt to bypass home computer security devices. * Passwords must not be shared outside of the immediate family. * Explain to your child that downloading pirated music or unauthorized software is illegal, dishonest, and can result in large fines. * Discuss computer ethics with your child. For example: No hacking into other sites or experimenting with computer viruses. * Instill civility: Computers are not used to harass or say mean things to other people.
