Elk abound in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), a land mass - TopicsExpress

Elk abound in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), a land mass that exceeds 25 million acres in size, with Yellowstone National Park comprising less than 10%. This ecosystem is home to a variety of large ungulates (hoofed mammals) including bison, elk, and—outside the park—domestic cattle. The ecosystem also hosts a nonnative infectious disease that can afflict these large ungulates: brucellosis. In the GYE, elk are the greatest risk for transmitting brucellosis to cattle outside the park, which has happened numerous times over the past decade. No transmissions from Yellowstone bison to cattle have been detected. For more information, please visit the park website at go.usa.gov/ZDM4.
