Elkridge Landing Middle School Rolling Thunder Newsletter FROM THE PRINCIPAL Next week report cards will come home on November 12. Be sure to check backpacks when students arrive home that afternoon. Please take some time to praise your child for all that they have accomplished during this first quarter as well as help them look for ways in which they can improve during quarter two. As you probably know, parent/teacher conference time will be the week of Thanksgiving. ELMS will again be using Pick-A-Time to schedule parent/teacher conferences. To access this program, please click on the link at hcpss.org/. There are detailed directions as well as video instructions. Please be sure to have a copy of your child’s schedule or the report card with you as you will need their student identification number to book conferences. Pick-a-Time will open at 3:00 on November 12. November 17-21 we will be celebrating American Education Week. During this week, you are invited to come to school and observe classes in action. Please try to find some time to visit our students (and teachers) and see how hard they are working to prepare for their futures. The PTSA will also be sponsoring the Finding Kind presentation on November 18th at 7:00 in the cafeteria. If you cannot make it for class, consider stopping by the cafeteria and joining your child for lunch and of course we would love to have lots of parents here for our first social on Friday the 21st. I am especially pleased to announce that for the second time in 10 years I have been here we will have 100% of our students participating in the PBIS social. This is a tremendous accomplishment and both staff and students are to be commended for the great start to the school year. Whole Grain Heroes will encourage our [6th] grade students to incorporate whole grain foods at lunchtime through a recognition and incentive campaign every Monday during the 7th grade lunch period. Each week on Monday the FACS teacher, Ms. Sanna will visit the cafeteria 7th grade lunch to identify students eating whole grain items from their lunch. All students identified will receive a “Be a Whole Grains Hero” sticker and will be entered into the weekly drawing for the Whole Grains Hero t-shirt. T-shirt winners will have their names displayed on a Whole Grains Hero poster and will be recognized at school. Both students buying lunch at school and students bringing lunch from home are eligible to participate and win. Students must be able to explain to the “judge”, Ms. Sanna what whole grain item they are eating and what whole grains the item contains. Students enrolled in FACS will have learned about whole grains including how to identify whole grain products and ways to incorporate whole grains in snacks and meals. We are excited about the opportunity to work with parents and the community to promote healthy eating choices for our children. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, need additional information, or have ideas to support Whole Grain Heroes. Sincerely, Ms. Sanna Family and Consumer Science Teacher November Parent/Techer Conferences Parents may schedule conferences using the Pick-A-Time Conference Scheduling system which will be turned on November 12th at 3:00 PM. The system will close November 23rd at 11:00 PM. Your child’s student ID number, which can be found on his/her report card, is required to access the system. You may access the link by visiting the HCPSS website. Nomination for GT Testing HCPSS is currently in the process of accepting nominations for sixth and seventh grade students for possible participation in middle school G/T content classes (English, mathematics, science, and social studies). The nomination period will last from November 7, 2014 – December 5, 2014. If you wish to nominate your child for G/T testing, please submit a signed Nomination Form to the G/T Resource Teacher by December 5, 2014. The form may be obtained from Ms. Holy-Ilenda, G/T Resource Teacher, at [email protected]. Students currently participating successfully in a G/T content class in middle school are eligible to continue in that discipline next year without the need for any additional paperwork or testing. If your child has already been tested for the G/T Program, parents may submit a request for a Placement Review via email for a particular content area class rather than having the student retest. If you have any questions, please feel free to email Ms. Holy-Ilenda at [email protected]. Picture re-take Day Our picture re-take day will be November 17th. If your child is having her/his portrait retaken, please return the original package to the photographer. If your child was absent on the original picture day, complete a picture purchase form (found in the front office) to give to the photographer.
