James Malatras, who graduated from Ellenville High in 1996, will become director of state operations in the administration of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the governors press office confirmed. Malatras takes over for Howard Glaser, a top aide to Cuomo, who stepped down in June to work in the private sector. Malatras previously worked in the Cuomo administration as his deputy secretary for policy management but in July 2013 left to become the vice chancellor for policy and chief of staff at the State University of New York. Traditionally, the director of state operations oversees day-to-day operations of state agencies and has several top assistants who help draft and negotiate the governors program bills and coordinating policy, according to the book New York State Government by Robert Ward. Glaser was heavily involved in helping legalize casino-style gambling in the state. Malatras is expected to oversee its rollout, according to the Wall Street Journal. Before he served in policy management for Cuomo, Malatras was deputy director for policy on Cuomos campaign for governor, served as executive director of legislative affairs and state policy for Cuomo when Cuomo was state attorney general, and was legislative director to former Assemblyman Richard Brodsky. Ulster County Comptroller Elliot Auerbach, an Ellenville native, said Malatras graduated from Ellenville High School and worked in his fathers Ace hardware store. Hes a real bright, outstanding guy, Auerbach said. jnani@th-record
