Ellie Update #30: Boy, am I glad to be able to share more good news with all of our friends and Ellie fans out there. Med Vet did the complete blood count and blood chemistry and heres the dirt: Ellie has mild anemia with a red blood cell count of 32.3% which is up from what it was before so no more ongoing blood loss --- YAY!!! Its still a little below normal (which is 35%) but the fact that she is holding steady is very encouraging to us and indicates that the GI bleed is resolving or resolved. And we expect her bone marrow to really start producing those baby blood cells once certain medications can be stepped back. Ellies white platelet count is NORMAL and her Proteins, which were low before, are now also NORMAL! YAY!!!!!! Her ALP liver value is slightly elevated but Dr. OKine feels that is induced by steroids we have her on at this time and the elevation is so mild, she is not concerned. But of course, this is going to be monitored closely to make sure that it doesnt get worse. This week, we start doing a step back on the Prednisone and in the next week or so, we will use up some of the other medications she is on and then (barring no complications) she will be done with those. PLUS, when we take her back next week for another CBC and blood chemistry, they are going to remove her surgical sutures! YAY!!!! Now mind you, Ellie has been exhibiting a bit of anxiety late at night, and it seems to me that when she lays down for any length of time, she cant seem to get comfortable. Dr. OKine suspects it is due to her neck hurting. Ellie is on Traumeel now and we will be starting her on Zeel as well -- both all natural pain killers that you can get at Whole Foods. We also will be doing a consult to see if Ellie is a good candidate for acupuncture --- in the past, that really helped MY back problems and I see no reason why it wouldnt help her, too. So, that is the scoop right now. Other than the discomfort at night, Ellie is eating well, having normal bowel and bladder function, alert, bright eyed, and always wagging her tail. Shes back to mooching food whenever she can and has no problem waking me in the morning to start the days routine! How I love this dog!!! Again, thank you all for everything, we appreciate it LOTS!!!
