Elvis wins on US number one singles From Mr Paul Gambaccini. Sir, Ludovic Hunter-Tilney mentions that Jay-Z has had “more US number one albums than Elvis Presley” (review, October 14). This sounds more impressive than it is. The rapper has indeed had 13 number one albums compared with Presley’s 10, but Elvis spent 67 weeks at number one, dwarfing Jay-Z’s 19. Furthermore, the use of the album chart to convey Presley’s impact is like talking about David Beckham’s prowess on the cricket pitch to determine his sporting achievements. Elvis was primarily a singles artist, and had 18 US number one songs while Jay-Z has one. However, I will agree that Elvis was unaccomplished at cricket. He left that to Buddy Holly.
