In many respects, it is the last remaining vestige, of Ely Farm !. The house is said to have been redeveloped, around 1818 from a house , said to have been built-in the time of Queen Elizabeth 1st. It was the residence of the late George Thomas B1821-D1898. He was known as “the Oracal of Ely”. His son , Iltyd Thomas B1864-D1945 later Sir Iltyd Thomas, was Lord Mayor of Cardiff 1907-1908. George Thomas was born at Great House, Pentyrch Iron Works at 7pm January 12th 1821. His Father was William Thomas B1775- D1850. His Great Grand Father, was Thomas William George B1713-D1744, who founded the Pentyrch Iron Works, and laid its foundation stone in 1740. The works were originally owned circa 1746, by Mr Nicholas Price of Pontypandy, and Mr Thomas Lewis of Thornhill. William Thomas, took over Ely Farm after his Brother in-law. William ran it fron 1832-1843, when he gave it up to his son George, and returned to Pentyrch. George’s education, had included, being taught by Mr (William Howard) Phipson at Fairwater, located in the Llandaff Parish. His school mates included the young, Mr Martin of Dowlais, Mr J. H. Insole of Ely Court, and Alderman Daniel Jones. This school was considered to provide, “the best Education in the neighbourhood”, 1822-1826. George Thomas Married Elizabeth Davies of Wedal Farm (Died Mon January 11th 1897 aged 76 years), on January 28th 1843 at Llandaff Cathedral He was known as the “Oracle of Ely”. He was Clerk of the Parish Council 1859-1894,,High Constable of the Kibbor 1866-1896. Clerk of the Llandaff Burial Board. In 1896 George Thomas was listed as being in the business of Valuers, auctioneer’s and Surveyors, with Offices at Quay Street Cardiff. George Thomas was buried in the family vault, on the Taff side, to the front of the of the main door to Llandaff Cathedral in 1898. The memorial pillar above the vault bears the inscription “Praises on tome stones are trifles, vainly spent. A mans good name is his own monument”. The Farm House was extended in the early 1800’s , having originally been erected in the time of Queen Elizabeth the first. That’s around 1600 AD. Illtyd Thomas, ran Ely Farm, after his father’s death in 1898. Up till 1931. Illtyd was Lord Mayor of Cardiff 1907-1908, Hon Treasurer of the National Museum of Wales 1917-1924. In 1931 Ely Farm, was taken over by Mr and Mrs Davies. It is understood that after the Davies gave up Ely Farm, a number of years ago, sometime at the beginning of the 21st century, it was acquired by the Welsh Development Agency, which later passed into the National Assembly Government for Wales. The land now appears, to be viewed as part of the old Ely Paper Mills site redevelopment project, and it is understood, that the Ely Farm House has been demolished to make way, for Four new Houses !!!
