Elysium - so on one level we have the issue of immigration, the wish to reach the promised land, the homeland security shoot em down now, the rich living in space in a Stanley Kubrick home spun space station with no sickness, no cancer and a cure for all if your rich. Meanwhile earth is bogging, decimated and policed by ruthless automatons. Touches of Terminator, Transformers, Space Odyssey, Robocop and Total Recall. Or in fact some have said the film has touches of present day LA with their mansions, beautiful people and servants, maids and cleaners. So depends on what you want you can think of it as a sci fi movie depicting depressing earth, happy space-land, the token baddie with a south African accent, the token crime lord for the underprivileged of Latino origin, and the token hero Matt Damon out to save everyone . Yes there is the female love interest with sick child in tow that no doubt has Mr Damon attacking any thing that threatens them. Or you can dissect the other deeper socio political levels it has to offer, for me its a Sunday nite...a crafty movie with pretty good special effects and nothing too much else to think about. ps Mr Damon has done his work at the gym but he does not suit the shaved head on the other hand shaved heads belong to Mr Diesel, Mr Willis , Mr Johnston.Over and out.
