Email Marketing The internet age has affected every aspect of business globally and Zimbabwe is fast catching up. As a means of getting consumers aware of different products that companies are offering, email marketing has become one of the means by which companies are using to advertise their products and services. There has been an emergence of Email Service Providers (ESP) who offers bulk email services. I think in one way or the other you have received such emails from these ESPs. Have you ever asked yourself how they got your email address? The practice in developed nations is that these ESPs must get the permission from you for them to send you emails and also they must provide you with the option to unsubscribe to their mailing list. In Zimbabwe most of these ESPs are just collecting email addresses without the consent of the owners of the addresses. One of such ESPs that has of late been sending email adverts is ACS Adverts. Everyday l open my email I find there is an email from this company. They send all sorts of adverts. On enquiry they tell you that they have a data base of over 10 000 emails addresses and my question is if these guys had done their job correctly they will actually be sending more targeted emails for the particular products or services that one requires or wants. They charge $40.00 for their service per advert. I wonder if their clients have ever asked them the composition of their database in order to get value from the marketing efforts or its just that they are enticed by the 10 000+ email contacts they are told they have. What l know and l guess everyone also knows this that once you see an email in your inbox that you do not know its origin or you have not solicited you either delete it or classify it as SPAM. I think there is need for the Ministry of Information Technology to regulate this issue because its unethical just to send unsolicited emails and more so it’s not giving value to businesses that are buying these services. Its like shooting in the dark hoping to getting something. The ESPs should be more organized and start doing the right thing before offer their services to the public.
