Email exchange with a beginning writer today: HIM: Mr. Sawyer, I am an aspiring author. I also know you are a very busy person. However I ask only for a few minutes of your time to pose 3 questions to you. They are: 1. If you had 30 seconds in a elevator to ask a respected and talented writer for their advice, what question would you ask? 2. What is the single most critical skill for a aspiring author to have in todays market? 3. What are your thoughts on shared universes (such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Forgotten Realms and others)? Again I deeply appreciate your time and thank you. === ME: 1) What book by someone other than yourself taught you the most about writing? (My answer: TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.) 2) Actual writing skill. Not being social-media-savvy, not perseverance, but actual skill. 3) Stay away from them; their fans are fans of those universes, not the fungible writers who toil in them; working in them does nothing to make YOUR name. === HIM: If I may, one follow up question. Regarding your answer for #3, would you change it if the shared universe was one that you created? === ME: I wouldnt share my universe. What would be the point, besides getting others to work to build YOUR name? === HIM: Again thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions. You have given me much to ponder.
