“Embarrassment and humiliation of the highest order!” This was the sentiment expressed by Opposition Senator Dr. Linton Lewis regarding the manner in which his fellow parliamentarian Vynnette Frederick was arrested on Thursday July 11th 2013. Lewis was at the time making his address at a NDP Public Meeting at Bay Road, Georgetown. The Senator asked the question “why did they have to arrest her (Frederick) at that time when the charges were just withdrawn,” adding that "they wanted to humiliate and embarrass her because she is an Opposition Member of Parliament." Lewis, who is also the President of the SVG Bar Association, said that they should have issued a summons and brought her to court, but they simply brought unnecessary force in the form of the police to arrest her . He noted that this issue is not about party, but what can happen to each and every one of us. He added that we must ensure all of us are given an opportunity to have equal rights and justice, and made a call for Vincentians to make their voices heard. He further stated that we have to be careful on the type of leadership we have in this country. Lewis also made reference to a statement made by Senator Julian Francis, stating that Francis made it worse by saying “he is sure if the NDP was in power, they would have brought back the charges against a ULP member.” Lewis said this gives the impression that it is the ULP who is bringing the charges against Senator Frederick, adding that “it is the constitution which is supposed to have supremacy, not any one party.”
