Embracing change “You know a dream is like a river, ever changing as is flows; And the dreamer’s just a vessel that must follow where it goes. Trying to learn from what’s behind you, and never knowing what’s in store; makes each day constant battle, just to stay between the shores.” Garth Brooks, (I will sail my vessel). Life will bring us on many wondrous adventures, some will be exciting and fun, others will be sad and filled with sorrow. Nothing we can do will change what the future brings; but we can learn to accept change, no matter how it comes, as a lesson to be learned at this time in life, because we are in preparation to handle what tomorrow will bring. In short, one life experience builds upon the next, and we are kept in a constant state of learning and growth as we travel through this world. There are those, and I have done this myself, who refuse to accept change, learn the lesson, or believe they know what’s best for them no matter how many people around them tell them to stop a negative behavior. I don’t often use the word, “Doom”, but in this case no better word applies. When we ignore life’s lessons, refuse to accept change, and continue destructive behaviors we are “Doomed” to continue relearning the same lesson, over and over. Change is a necessary part of who we are. This life we live is filled with lessons and boundaries; though some would attempt to manipulate or change the outcome of the lesson we must learn from in order to grow and thrive. When we refuse to accept the truth, grow beyond an event, or chose to remain stuck in one moment in time we, in essence, stop all forward progress/growth. We become mired/stuck in a situation or place that we cannot thrive or grow in. When this occurs our behaviors become like those of wounded animal just trying to survive day to day. In this animalistic survival mode, we are easily set off by the smallest thing. We snap at those who love us most, and we often times engage in self-defeating or self-destructive behaviors. At some point in this future of pain and hurt we forget why we started acting out in the first place, and now these negative behaviors have become part, or all of who we are. Change isn’t always ways a bad thing; but remaining stuck at one point in time is a tragedy. The next time you face change that makes you uncomfortable, upset, or breaks your heart take note of the situation and the circumstances surrounding this change. Failure to acknowledge our powerlessness over change can lead to a life of suffering and diminished joy; In fact so diminished, that we forget what joy is truly about, and the only emotion left to us is anger. Many times in this life, I have chosen to just “exist” in the midst of change because I as was unwilling to accept that I couldn’t change the outcome of a given situation, or because I selfishly believed I deserved more when I was given plenty. Today I may not like all the changes that life throws at me, but I make an effort to accept change, truly make it my own, and discover who I am inside through the power of change. No matter how change comes to you or from which direction it comes at you…embrace it, feel it, and learn to live with it. Without change there is no growth, and without growth there is no life…just sad existence.
