Emergency relief for flood-hit families in Upper Kuttanad an hour ago , By Staff Reporter TAKING STOCK: Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash, accompanied by Mathew T. Thomas, MLA; District Collector Pranab Jyotinath, and other Revenue officials, visiting the flood-hit areas of Peringara panchayat in Thiruvalla taluk on Saturday. Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash visited the flood-hit areas of Upper Kuttanad in Thiruvalla taluk on Saturday. Mr. Prakash said all the affected families in the flood-ravaged areas who were shifted to various relief camps would be provided with an emergency relief worth Rs.2,000 each. He said steps would be taken to provide free ration to all the affected families in the flood-hit areas for two weeks on the basis of a report submitted by the District Collector. The Minister, accompanied by Mathew T. Thomas, MLA; District Collector Pranab Jyotinath and other officials, also visited the relief camps opened at the CMS High School at Thukalassery, Adambada colony at Thirumoolapuram, Nedumpram panchayat community hall, Thiruvalla municipal community hall, Government New LPS at Chathankary, and St John’s UP School at Mepral. As many as 63 flood-affected families were camping at the Komamkery Bridge in the Upper Kuttanad village of Peringara and theMinister directed the district revenue authorities to treat the camp as a relief camp and to provide free ration and other facilities to them too. Mr. Prakash directed the officials to rebuild the damaged shutters of the Kottathode canal. Eapen Kurien, Pulikeezhu block panchayat president; Sam Eapen, Peringara grama panchayat president; T.K. Sajeev, Kaviyur panchayat president; Thankamony Nanappan, Kadapra panchayat president, and T. Prasannakumari, Nedumpram panchayat president, apprised the Minister of various problems facing the flood-affected areas that warranted urgent government attention. Many parts of Upper Kuttanad continued to remain flooded owing to blocking of various natural flood escape routes in the indiscriminate land conversion spree in the region.
