Eminent Victorian Algernon Bertram Mitford, Barty, 1st Baron Redesdale, was grandfather to the Mitford sisters. He was appointed Secretary of the British Embassy in St Petersburg in 1858. He later travelled to Japan, wrote Tales Of Old Japan in 1871 and worked with Gilbert & Sullivan on their 1885 opera The Mikado. In the course of an affair with his wifes sister, Blache, he was considered to be the father of Clementine Hozier (1885-1977), who married Winston Churchill. Between 1910-1912 he was President of the Royal Photographic Society. Quite the dandy here (photo by Camille Silvy):
