Eminent singer and music director Rakhal Chandra Mohanty will be honoured with the Nitai Palit award, given by a film magazine on January 5, for his lifetime contribution to Odia film and music. The 81-year-old musician, talks to Binita Jaiswal about his journey, present music scenario in Odisha and much more Whats your take on the current music scenario in Odia film industry? With changing times the music industry has also changed. In terms of technology we have advanced a lot but I feel quality of music has deteriorated in the last few years. The melodiousness, originality and fragrance of Odissi music is missing from todays songs. I find majority of the Odia film songs are copy of Bollywood songs or other regional film songs. The music directors and singers have stopped being creative. According to you who is responsible for this trend? I wont blame the music directors and singers for it. These days Odia film industry is churning out movies which are remakes of South Indian movies so even the composers, lyricist and singers are forced to make songs to suit it. They are not getting enough opportunity to show their creativity and talent. In our times, the music composers used Odishas folk tunes like Sambalpuri, and Odissi music in their songs but today hardly anyone does that. The Odia taste is missing from our songs. It seems musicians have started forgetting our rich culture and heritage.
