Emmie Burke believed that if her son once knew how to do something that he could retrieve that memory and through repetition regain skills lost as a result of his brain injury. Early activities included drawing. In this early photo, Lenny drew a picture of a Vermont farmhouse and off-handedly suggested his mother might purchase a farm someday so the two could help others with similar injuries. This is Lenny Burke’s Farm, the first of several residences established thirty years ago by Emmie Burke and her son Lenny to serve the needs of people who had sustained traumatic brain injuries such as Lenny’s. Over the years, more than 300 people have “graduated” to independent living through the services offered here. Today, 22 people live in this farmhouse and the satellite buildings overseen through the program. Their story is told in The Bend in the Road. Here’s an excerpt from the book:
