Empathy......Is empathy growing today? Yes, in some ways it is. We think globally now because the internet has taken away the distance between us. It makes sense that the closer we are physically, the greater our empathy should be. It is said that Republicans care about the person next door, and Democrats care about the whole world. Without a doubt there are groups separated by political, religions, ethnic, and nationalistic views that have no empathy what so ever. But I am not sure what term to use for this. Tell me if you know which word would work here the best. I will use the word hatred to be the opposite of empathy for now. This global empathy is in increasing, yet in our country there seems to be an awful split between different sanctions. For example, the poor are no longer pitied, or cared for by some, but they are hated and criminalized. What has happen to us? Obama said that we have a national deficit of empathy and that this deficit was more worrisome than our financial deficits. Which is more important? We will wildly disagree on this statement. So lets be empathetic now, and agree to disagree. You all know how I feel about this. One of my favorite quotes is this, The sign of a truly civilized society is not measured by how we treat the best of them, but how we treat the least of them. How do we treat the least fortunate? Are we as civilized as we think we are? I think we have a long way to go. The following video gives me hope.
