Emulate Unilorin, NANS tells Nigerian varsities Universities in Nigeria have been urged to embrace the culture of academic consistency and excellence that has distinguished the University of Ilorin these past few years if they are to feature among the leading tertiary educational institutions in the world. The Coordinator of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone C, Mr. Adio Odunjo, gave this advice last Thursday (November 21, 2013) when he led members of the Zonal Executive Committee members of the Association on a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, in his office. NANS Zone C, which is the largest zone, comprises ten states in the North-Central and the North-East geo-political zone of the country.. During the visit, the NANS officials conferred the award of the “Most Outstanding University in Nigeria for the year 2013” on the University of Ilorin. On the Award, the NANS Zone C Coordinator said, “The conferment of this award on the University of Ilorin is in line with our determination to appreciate the effort of this University, especially under the present administration.” Mr. Odunjo explained that NANS had, over the years, taken special interest in the standard of education that the University of Ilorin has continued to offer “even in the face of the growing challenges facing the education sector in the country.” In his response, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ambali, thanked the association for recognising the modest achievements the University had recorded, saying that the University cherishes the award. Prof. Ambali recalled that the West African Students Union (WASU) presented a similar award of excellence to the University only two weeks ago, pointing out that the laurels being garnered by Unilorin in recent times were the dividends of the sacrifice which the management and staff have made. According to the Vice-Chancelllor, “the main focus of the University of Ilorin is the urge to satisfy its clients, who are our students. We are all here because of the students. Everything we do here has been student-centred.” With the Vice-Chancellor to receive the NANS delegates were the three Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Prof. Bayo Lawal (Academic); Prof. Yisa Fakunle (Management Services); and Prof. Felix Oladele (Research, Technology and Innovations); the Registrar, represented by the Deputy Registrar, Mrs A. Okojie; the Bursar, Mr. Saka Yusuf; the University Librarian, Dr. Joseph Omoniyi; the Dean, Student Affairs, Prof. A. O. Omotesho; the Sub-Dean, Student Affairs, Dr. A. Yusuf and the Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun.
