Encourage Reluctant Readers You know your child should read more. But he just isnt interested in picking up a book. Here are some ways to encourage reluctant readers: Look for a magazine or newspaper story on a subject that interests your child. Start with a high-interest subject, like sports or music. Look in the library for a book on a subject that interests your child. Or, go online and use a search engine to find information about the subject. Encourage your child to read mysteries. They usually move quickly and keep a readers attention. Ask your child about a book he enjoyed. (Okay, ask your child about a book that wasnt too bad. Reluctant readers might not have a favorite book.) See if that author has written other books. Look for a book that was made into a movie. When your child finishes the book, watch the movie together. Talk about how the film is different from the book. Read aloud. Sometimes, the hardest part of reading is getting started. If you can get to the good part, your child may enjoy reading the rest of the book himself. brought to you by Parent Connection Virginia Beach City Public Schools
