Enders Game is a wonderful science fiction book written by Orson Scott Card. The story is that Earth was invaded by insect like creatures and eventually driven off, but not after causing major destruction. The planet comes together and sets up a testing program for children looking for those with the physical, intellectual and personality traits to lead in the next battle with the Formics. Andrew Ender Wiggins is one of these children and we follow his testing and advancement. It is filled with familial conflicts, psychological turmoil, military strategy, war games, etc. Unfortunately, the movie is not, but I enjoyed it just the same. Having read the book a few times, it was a lot like reading Harry Potter and then going to see a movie, i.e. hey they left out..... I think you can still enjoy this film on its own, but I am certain you will enjoy it more if you have read the book, as you are much more familiar with the characters than the movie time allows them to be developed. The antigravity scenes in the battle room are top notch as are most of the special effects. Asa Butterfield does a great job as Ender and, as usual, Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley are excellent as Enders military mentors. Read the book and go see the movie or go see the movie and read the book, I dont think you can go wrong either way. We splurged to see it on IMAX (not 3D) because it was a space movie, but neither of us felt it added to the film, so save your money. 3 stars. Check it out.
