Endometriosis Endometriosis is a disease that occurs when the tissue of the uterus grows onto other organs, most commonly the ovaries and fallopian tubes. Tissue may also grow outside the uterus, on lining of the pelvic cavity and on other tissues that keep the uterus in place. It is a chronic disease that sometimes causes pelvic pain or infertility. Doctors and scientists have a few ideas about what causes endometriosis, but they have not yet identified one specific cause. Some theories include genetics, an immune system that is unable to destroy the rogue tissues, an imbalance of estrogen, exposure to dioxin or movement of the tissue from the uterus to other body parts through blood flow. Dandelions In addition to traditional medication, some people are increasingly turning to natural remedies for treatment. Surprisingly enough, dandelions -- those yellow, annoying weeds that grow all over your front lawn -- have many health benefits including properties that could help women fight endometriosis. Dandelions may increase urine production, boost the immune system, reduce bad estrogen, detox the bladder and provide antioxidants. Digested in any form, but more specifically as a tea, dandelions can have a positive impact. To make dandelion tea, simply steep the yellow flowers in boiling water for a few minutes, drain and enjoy. Be aware that the taste is bitter. Vitamins and Minerals Dandelions are actually packed with vitamins and minerals that are important for women’s health. These include vitamins A, B, K, silica and calcium. Most women with endometriosis have deficiencies in those vitamins and minerals, which could cause increased pain and contribute to nervous disorder. Dandelion tea has also been linked with reducing inflammation, which may decrease pain in your reproductive system. Stregthens the Immune System A healthy immune system is important for warding off endometriosis. The abnormal growth of tissue associated with endometriosis could possibly be attributed to a weak immune system. Dandelions contain flavones, an antioxidant, that helps improve the immune system’s ability to fight the bacteria, virus and abnormal growth of cells. Estrogen and Liver Function The inability for the liver to break down estrogen has been linked as a possible cause of endometriosis. Dandelion can help increase fat and protein metabolism by the liver, which can reduce the level of this hormone that contributes to irritation, anxiety and insomnia. Specifically, one study, conducted by a Canadian naturopathic physician, found that when 15 women with endometriosis were given a liver-stimulating concoction made of dandelion, beet leaves, cascara and Uva ursi, 12 of the 15 women reported to be free of the pain associated with endometriosis after just a few months.
