Endorsement rebuttal: Howard dedicated to students, board Friday, August 22, 2014 at 9:17 pm I would like to thank the editorial board for the kind and supportive words written in the endorsement article for school board District 4. The comments, “Both Balfour and Howard are well-prepared and enthusiastic candidates, and the county would be well served by either of them being elected to the board” and “The District 4 school board race gives the public a choice between two good candidates” are very positive for both candidates. I would like to share three areas where I believe that my skills and abilities would benefit the families of Citrus County. New assessments and standards: One of the most significant areas of need for our district is the implementation of a new curriculum, new standards and new assessments. This is my area of expertise. I have a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction and have spent the past two years as a district curriculum specialist. I understand assessments and standards and know how to use them. It is critical that a member of the school board is dedicated to providing an instructional support system for teachers as they implement the new standards and assessments. Technical skills gap: I am also very concerned about the technical skills gap in our country and am committed to bringing feeder courses to the middle and high schools that prepare students to enter Withlacoochee Technical School. Students who do not choose to pursue a post-secondary education should be equipped, upon high school graduation, with the skills needed to live a successful and productive life. Single focus: I am committed to being a full-time, single-focused school board member. I have the knowledge, energy and true grit to get the job done. My main priority is the students. Being a member of the school board is a big deal to me because kids are a big deal. I ask for your vote on Aug. 26 or before. Let’s keep education the pride of Citrus County.
