Energy firm, ANTECO sign power supply deal SAN JOSE, Antique — Officials of the Sunwest Water and Electric Co. II (SUWECO II) and the Antique Electric Cooperative (ANTECO) signed on Friday a 20-year power supply agreement for the eight-megawatt (MW) Villasiga 1 mini-hydropower project. Under the agreement, SUWECO II will sell the full capacity of its Villasiga 1 hydropower plant in Bugasong town to ANTECO. The eight-MW is an initial capacity provision, as SUWECO will also provide ANTECO the capacity of its two-MW Guiamon–San Ramon hydropower plant in Lauan-an, which will be operational in 2017 or 2018. SUWECO said the eight-MW Villasiga hydropower project, which is a run-of-river renewable energy, would be the first hydropower plant in Panay Island. SUWECO president Jose Silvestre Natividad said they aim to complete the Villasiga 1 project within the year, and to operate it by January next year. Aside from this project, he said SUWECO remains committed to its projects in the pipeline, including the three-MW Dalanas and the 2.1-MW Tibiao hydro projects, both were also in Antique. “We are very positive with RE (renewable energy) developments that we do. We’re focused on [renewable energy sources] because this is our advocacy. And we’re happy that we combine advocacy and business,” Natividad said. For his part, ANTECO general manager Ludovico Lim said the power that SUWECO will provide accounts for a large part of its 17-MW requirements. He said the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation provides ANTECO’s seven-MW baseload, the contract of which will end in December this year. Once the contract expires, and given the continued rise in demand, ANTECO will definitely look for an additional provider, Lim said. “Historically, the requirements increase by three percent per year, and with the opening of new businesses, we also need to ensure that we’ll be able to provide (the power needs),” he added.
