Till 2012, students were supposed to give various exams for entering into different colleges. As of now, most of the exams will be replaced by JEE (Joint Entrance Exam)”. He informs, “JEE is an exam framed out on the lines of SAT in USA. It will give the applicant access for applying to central level engineering institutes and some private colleges and universities that accept it. After several talks with IIT Boards, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has designed a two-stage JEE called JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced). The students aiming for IITs need to clear JEE (Advanced). Whereas a score in JEE (Mains) will suffice the admission requirements for engineering colleges other than IITs. And also, one should note that IITs have designed a normalisation formula that assesses the equivalence of percentages of different Boards. For example, 87.5% of AP state board, 78% of TN state board, 84% of CBSE and 48% of Jharkhand are equal (Formula not revealed). Based on that, only the top 20% scorers of any board will be eligible to apply for JEE(Advanced) which makes the number of applicants to JEE (Advanced) approx 1,50,000 in a given academic year”. “The most popular engineering colleges that opposed this model are BITS Pilani, VIT and Amritha. These colleges will have their own entrance exams for their B.Tech programs. Similarly, the states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are relaxed from JEE (Mains) for their engineering entrance owing to their massive number of engineering colleges and time required for their transition towards going the CBSE way. Hence, students here have to write JEE for entrance in National level colleges and EAMCET or TNEA for state level colleges. And, MHRD expects them to confine to JEE (Main) from the academic year 2013-14,” Peratla further explains.
