England and France carved up the Ottoman Empire during World War I and it took Arabs many years thereafter to win some independence from European powers that set borders for Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Syria. The Israel-Syria conflict has basically continued since World War II, under the fog of civil, sectarian unrest between Shi’ites, Sunni, Hizballah, and Islamist extremists who join with interference from Saudi, Qatar, Russia, Iran, Turkey and U.S. who want “talks” to try to settle what remains unsettled for well over 80 years.
