English herd expands (sort of) with more pigs from fewer sows March 6, 2014 Reports NPA Total number of pigs being produced for slaughter by English pig-keepers increased significantly last year — up 7 percent at December 2013 compared to December 2012. But past losses, difficulty getting planning permission for new housing, producers retiring, environmental red-tape and a worrying lack of available land for outdoor pigs have all taken their toll on the national female breeding herd, which is down 2 percent. Will sow numbers increase this year? Todays census results suggest not. Gilts for first time breeding are down over 13 percent. What do you think????
