English teacher gripe: Im annoyed that there was very little intelligent discourse about Gillian Flynns novel when it came out, but now folks are coming out of the woodwork to discuss the Gone Girl film, as if David Fincher came up with this bullshit all by himself. In all fairness, I understand that film is a primary expressive medium of our time, but I am sad that it takes mass media production for us to have a conversation about controversial topics. The film is well done, but it, too, fails to answer questions for me that Flynns book poses in an awkward attempt at a feminist agenda that falls short of the mark in several big ways. My lingering question about both book and film is: Whats the point? Entertainment? Shock? Hopelessness over the state of the (privileged) human race? I guess its not a missed opportunity as long as we are conversing, but the conversation could have been so much more interesting, as could the text, and we should talk about why we need a film to get us there, especially if the film doesnt add anything new to the mix except broader, more graphic access to an inherently flawed message.
