Enjoy your New Year celebrations tonight but be sure to stay safe and be drink aware. If you do need health care, make sure you choose the right service and keep our Emergency Department (A&E) for those who really need it. For information on self care, which pharmacies will be open, minor injury units, and out of hours GP services visit: nhs.uk or call 111. NHS Kernow’s top tips to stay healthy over the New Year period include: 1) If you are feeling under the weather, seek advice from your local pharmacist Pharmacists are experts in providing medical information and advice. You can just drop in to see your pharmacist and many have private consultation areas. They can also advise on any over the counter remedies available and, if you need specialist medical advice, can point you in the right direction. ( For New Year opening hours see: bit.ly/1Hh1fj8 ) 2) Don’t delay, visit today Taking action early really can help, with many conditions worsening over time. If you’re coughing, sneezing or wheezing, get some help. 3) Maintain a well-stocked medicine cabinet There are lots of things that you can buy to ease your discomfort when suffering – ask your pharmacist for advice, especially if you are taking prescribed medicines. 4) Make sure you have enough prescribed medicines to see you through the New Year holiday period If you do run out of prescribed medicines, you may be able to access an emergency supply of urgent medication from a community pharmacy. Pharmacists are well placed to offer this service, so you don’t need to go to A&E or a minor injuries unit, or call the out of hours service. 5) Keep an eye on older friends, relatives or neighbours The winter can be a difficult time, particularly for older people. Keep an eye on elderly friends, relatives or neighbours. Whether it’s a quick phone call or a visit, it all helps. If they’re too unwell to visit their local pharmacy, why not offer to visit on their behalf?
