Yet we wither like grass when winter winds blow upon it. We fade like cut flowers in a vase, beautiful but for a few short days. You speak peace to us and call us to be faithful, yet we turn away from you, choosing folly, strife, and passing pleasures. You are patient with us, yet we accuse you of apathy and neglect. Forgive us, we pray. Make us mindful of our salvation through Jesus Christ, who was, and is, and is to be— the one who is eternally transforming us through the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen. In gratitude and thanks, we offer you our hearts, our lives, and all that we have. Use these gifts, we pray, to prepare your way of salvation and to establish your realm of peace. This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Song: “Come, Touch Our Hearts” (MV# 12, vv. 4) Prayer of Intercession Leader The Sacrament of Holy Communion Instrumental Song: “Bread of Life” (MV# 194, v. 1) The Invitation L: This is the table, not of the Church, but of the Lord. It is to be made ready for those who love Christ, and who want to love Christ more. -5- So come, you who have much faith and you who have little, you who have been here often and you who have not been for a long time, you who have tried to follow and you who have failed. Come, not because it is I who invite you: it is our Lord. It is his will that those who want him should meet him here. The Story P: Now let us hear the story of how this Sacrament began. L: On the night, on which Jesus was betrayed, he sat at supper with his disciples. While they were eating, he took a piece of bread, said a blessing, broke it and gave it to them with the words, ‘This is my body. It is broken for you. Do this to remember me.’ After the supper he took the Cup gave it to them and told them to drink all of it. P: So now, following Jesus’ example and command, We take this bread and this wine, The ordinary things of the world which Christ will make special. And as he said a prayer before sharing, Let us do so too. Prayer L: Gratitude, praise, hearts lifted high, voices full and joyful…these you deserve. P: For when we were nothing, you made us something When we had no name, no faith and no future, you called us your children. When we lost our way or turned away, you did not abandon us. When we came back to you, your arms opened wide in welcome. -6- L: And look, you prepare a table for us offering not just bread, not just wine, but your very self so that we may be filled, forgiven, healed, blessed and made new again. P: You are worth all our pain and all our praise. So now, in gratitude, We join our voices to those of the Church on earth and in heaven. Organ Sanctus: “Holy, Holy, Holy” (VU, pg. 941) The Breaking of the Bread & The Filling of the Cup The Prayer of Jesus (Tune – Kumbayah) Father (Parent) God in heaven, Lord most high Hear your children’s prayer, Lord most high, Hallowed be your name, Lord most high, O Lord, hear our prayer. Give us daily bread, day by day, And forgive our sins, day by day As we too forgive, day by day O Lord, hear our prayer. Lead us in your way, make us strong. She writes: Columbians take intense pride in tradition and a rich array of cultures. Colombia is also a place of violence stemming from long-standing conflicts between the state and guerrilla groups and from a thriving drug trade. There are wide divisions between the very wealthy and the very poor. Widespread hunger and poverty are simple facts of life for many. There is lack of trust in those in authority. And the people are weary. Every day people are forced out of the countryside by paramilitary attacks and the takeover of land by large corporations, including traditional land belonging to Indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities. Every day, displaced people arrive in cities without work, housing, community support, or traditional ways of growing and using food. Three Mission and Service partners in Colombia work for peace with justice. The Colombian Methodist Church carries out social ministries among displace people and in Afro-Columbian and Indigenous communities. The Centre for Popular Communication trains children, youth, women, and young journalists in new ways of collaboration, creating a culture of peace. The Justice and Life Project, headed by human rights defender Lilia Solano, is directly involved in political processes that draw government, guerrillas, and civil society organizations into peace talks. Your gifts for Mission and Service are working for peace in Colombia. Please give generously. Bringing God into the World Moderator’s Advent Message 2014 In the Protestant tradition, Mary has often been downplayed, but still she calls on our imaginations, especially in the Christmas season, when we remember a young girl, startled by the visit of the angel with the message about pregnancy; the moment when Mary says yes to God; the wild rejoicing of the Magnificat; the long journey to Bethlehem; no room at the inn; giving birth in the stable; visits by shepherds and wise men; and the final image of Mary pondering all these things in her heart. Mary, there she is, in stained glass glory and here, more humbly, carved in -12- olivewood from Palestine, here in the stable watching over her newborn baby. Now, the Greek Orthodox have a special term for Mary: Theotokos. Theo, of course, meaning God, and tokos, meaning, well, giving birth, or bringing forth, bearing, carrying, as if Mary were the one who, through her flesh, brings forth God into the world. There is an ancient hymn of praise for Mary that claims that she offered space for the uncontained God. I wonder if Mary is the invitation for each one of us to bring forth new life, to be open to the Spirit, to become pregnant well, with God, ourselves. I recall the words of a German mystic from the 14th century, Meister Eckhart, who said, “Of what use is it if Mary gave birth to the Son of God fourteen hundred years ago if I am not also giving birth to God in my time, in my place. We are all Mothers of God, for God is always needing to be born.” Now, that’s a thought worth pondering. I mean, what would it mean to give birth to God? Maybe that’s the deep meaning of incarnation—not only God in Jesus, but the uncontained Holy One asking for space in the lives of each one of us. The moment when God is waiting for our yes to the movement of the Holy Spirit so that it might find root room in our heart, so that we might become pregnant with hope and faith; where we might be ready for the long, slow, steady growth of possibility in the womb; ready for hard labour and bringing forth, giving birth to compassion and love, to peace and justice; where our hands and feet, our hearts and minds will become channels of God’s love in the world. Though, that may come in unexpected ways, like a Saviour who arrives as a little baby in a manger, wrapped in swaddling clothes. Let me finish with just a few words from another German mystic, Angelus Silesius, who says, “If in our hearts we make a manger for his birth, then God will once again become a child on earth”. That’s worth repeating. If in our hearts we make a manger for His birth, then once again God will become a child on earth. So, this Christmas, think about what it might mean for you to become pregnant with hope and love, and maybe give birth so that you, and all of the world, will know the deep meaning of Merry Christmas.
